Night Flight

2008
56" X 45"

Night Flight resulted from my fascination with the idea of the "One Block Wonder Quilts" of Maxine Rosenthal and the idea that using one single printed fabric pieced into hexagons to make an unlimited
number of different designs.

I hunted for months to find the perfect fabric. This one immediately grabbed me with its dark background and vivid insects. "Night Flight" was the obvious title once I decided to expand the butterfly theme with appliqué'.

The large butterflies were machine appliquéd in silk dupioni on the cotton pieced background. The butterfly wings were highlighted with Tsukineko inks and hot fix crystals. Some details such as antennae were done with free motion quilting. The center of the piece was machine quilted with a blue metallic thread. The dark blue border was channel quilted with the same thread.

Juried into "Celebrate Spring", Chicago, International Quilt Festival, 2009
