Mt. St. Michel
2010
25"W X 17"H

A trip to the evocative Mont. St. Michel on the Breton coast of France many years ago was the inspiration for this quilt which features my sketches of the Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century, the 11th century Romanesque Church of St. Michael and the medieval town which grew up around it on the rock ringed by 15th century stone fortifications. The rock connected to the mainland by a causeway becomes an island at high tide and was one of the four most important pilgrimage sites of the medieval era. Nothing evokes the spirit of the Middle Ages more than a moonlit walk up to the top reaches of the abbey through the narrow cobbled streets.

The world famous restaurant and inn "La Mere Poulard" within the town walls which features local salt marsh lamb and omelette soufflés cooked in massive wood fired ovens is just as lovingly remembered here as the gothic architecture!

The large image of the abbey was drawn directly on cotton fabric using fabric pens, the other images were digitally transferred on to fabric using my own sketches and images from my own photos and then machine appliquee'd.
Free motion quilting added to the scene.
