Kyoto Kaede

2006
28" X 56"

I've never been to Japan (a 20 hours overnight stay in an airport hotel doesn't count!) but I appreciate Japanese culture and aesthetics and wanted to use some artful Japanese fabrics in a quilt showcasing the beautiful natural sensibilities of that country.

Kaede is the Japanese word for maple leaves which turn color in the fall - hence the name of this quilt.

The quilt is a result of a five day workshop with the remarkable Ruth McDowell at Fabulous Fiber Fest in Santa Monica CA in August 2006. I used her straight line and curved piecing techniques and mounted a design in the manner of a Japanese scroll painting.

This quilt utilizes commercial batiks, printed Asian cottons , hand dyes and silks. It was free motion quilted on a domestic machine.
