Forrest's Flowers

2009

18 3/4 X 25 1/4

Epiphyllums - sometimes calles orchid cactus - are true cactus. Their large, bright, splashy blooms come out of nodes on the fleshy dark green leaves and are usually gone in a day. Some bloom
only for a single night.

The orchid cactus plants in our southern California garden were adopted from my husband's late grandfather's garden in Port Hueneme where they were part of a bright corner (some of them planted in old paint cans) with birds of paradise. This was almost 20 years ago and they still brighten a dark corner of our garden patio beneath the shade of a jacaranda against an old weathered redword fence.

This inspiration for this quilt were my own photographs of some of this spring's blossoms which I manipulated in Photoshop and printed on artist canvas. These images were further enhanced with colored pencils, water soluble crayons, Tsukineko inks and glass beads and then applied to a gradated green ground which was free motion quilted. The leaves are thread painted
and applique'd.
